What is Ambien?
Ambien is a sedative-hypnotic used for the short-term treatment of insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep).
How does Ambien work?
Ambien can be very effective in the short-term treatment of insomnia. It can help you fall asleep, stay asleep, and not awaken prematurely.
Ambien works with a natural brain chemical called GABA. GABA is one of at least 18 major brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters control communication among neighboring brain cells by either increasing or decreasing their electrical activity.
Once released from a brain cell, GABA dampens the electrical activity of neighboring brain cells. Ambien works with GABA to further reduce the possibility of certain brain cells becoming electrically active. It is not chemically related to some sleep drugs of the past that also worked with GABA, and unlike these earlier drugs, Ambien targets a specific area of the brain cell, potentially decreasing side effects.
Are there any side effects?
SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include daytime drowsiness or dizziness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
How should I use Ambien?
Use this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. THIS MEDICINE WORKS VERY QUICKLY; take this medicine right before going to bed. Use it only when you will be able to sleep 7 to 8 hours or longer. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature, away from heat and light.

Are there any other precautions when using Ambien?
You may experience trouble sleeping for 1 to 2 nights after you stop taking this medicine. If it continues, contact your doctor. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children.
